Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the RFLXN mobile application, account-based web application, website at https://www.rflxn.app/, and related services (collectively, the "Service") operated by RFLXN ("we," "us," "our"). Please read these Terms carefully before using the Service.

1. Acceptance of terms

By downloading, installing, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. United States only

The Service is offered only to users located in the United States. You represent that you are physically present in the United States when you access or use the Service. We do not market, license, or intend the Service for use outside the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative and at your own risk, and you are responsible for compliance with local laws.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee and applicable United States federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles that would apply the laws of another jurisdiction.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account or use features that require sign-in. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this age requirement. The Service is not directed to children under 16.

4. RFLXN is a study companion — not professional care

RFLXN is a Bible study companion. It helps you read scripture, reflect, journal, and explore questions with an optional AI assistant ("Companion"). It is not pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, clergy, church community, licensed mental health care, medical care, legal advice, or financial advice — and it is not a substitute for any of them.

Companion is an AI assistant. It is not a pastor, theologian, spiritual director, licensed counselor, therapist, doctor, attorney, or financial advisor. Responses are generated by a language model and may contain errors, omissions, misattributions, or interpretations you disagree with. Treat them as a starting point for your own study and discernment, not a final or authoritative answer.

Do not rely on RFLXN or Companion for:

  • Theological authority, doctrinal rulings, or binding spiritual guidance
  • Pastoral counseling, confession, sacramental care, or church discipline
  • Diagnosis or treatment of mental health, medical, or substance-use conditions
  • Legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions
  • Crisis or emergency support (see Section 5)

For matters of faith, conscience, and community, turn to scripture, prayer, and the people and institutions you trust — your church, pastor, spiritual director, or qualified professionals. No interaction with Companion creates a pastoral, fiduciary, therapeutic, or professional relationship with RFLXN.

5. Crisis and self-harm

If you are in crisis, thinking about self-harm, or believe someone is in immediate danger, do not use Companion. Contact trained professionals right now:

  • United States — 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org
  • Immediate danger: call 911 (or your local emergency number)
  • Outside the United States: contact your local emergency services or a trusted medical or mental health professional. (Example: UK & Ireland — Samaritans 116 123.)

RFLXN may surface crisis-related language in Companion conversations. That is not crisis intervention. We are not equipped to assess risk, intervene, or provide ongoing care. You agree not to hold RFLXN responsible for outcomes arising from crisis situations, including any reliance on AI-generated responses during distress.

6. Doctrinal stance

RFLXN aims to present scripture and Christian study material across denominational traditions. The Service may include multiple Bible translations, reading tools, and AI-generated explanations that reference a range of Christian views. RFLXN does not endorse a specific theological position, denomination, or interpretive school. Where content describes differing views, that is descriptive, not prescriptive. Your tradition, community, clergy, and personal discernment remain primary.

7. Subscriptions and payments

Some features require a paid subscription. RFLXN currently supports a limited free Companion allowance and paid Companion access. Free accounts may receive a monthly Companion quota, such as 10 free chats per month, subject to change or abuse controls. Paid plan names, prices, trial periods, and feature tiers will be shown in the app, web app, store listing, or checkout screen at the time of purchase and may change with notice as allowed by store or payment-provider policies.

Subscriptions may be processed through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or web checkout provider shown at purchase. Web checkout is managed through RevenueCat Web Billing and may use Stripe or another payment processor to securely process payment details. Subscription management, billing, and entitlements may be handled in part by RevenueCat, the applicable app store, or the web checkout provider on our behalf.

  • Auto-renewal: Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
  • Cancellation: Manage or cancel through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, RevenueCat customer support flow, or checkout provider used at purchase. We cannot cancel app-store subscriptions on your behalf.
  • Free trials: If offered, unused trial time is forfeited when you purchase a subscription, where applicable under store rules.
  • Price changes: Store platforms or checkout providers may notify you of price changes; your continued subscription after notice constitutes acceptance where required by the store or payment-provider policies.
  • Cross-platform access: RFLXN is designed so one active subscription tied to your signed-in account can unlock eligible Companion features on iOS, Android, and web. You should not need to buy separate mobile and web subscriptions for the same account.

Web access may require signing in with the same RFLXN account used by the mobile app so subscription entitlements can sync. If a mobile subscription does not appear on web, restore purchases in the mobile app and contact support if the issue continues. In case of conflict between these Terms and an in-app, store, or web-checkout disclosure at purchase, the store listing, in-app purchase screen, or web checkout screen governs the transaction.

8. Refunds

Mobile app payments and refunds are handled by Apple or Google, not RFLXN. We do not process mobile refunds directly. To request a refund, use the refund process provided by the store through which you subscribed (for example, Apple's "Report a Problem" or Google's Play refund request). Refund eligibility is determined by Apple, Google, and applicable store policies. Web checkout payments and refunds are handled by the checkout or payment provider shown at purchase, such as RevenueCat Web Billing or Stripe. Refund eligibility for web purchases is determined by the applicable provider policies and any disclosures shown during checkout.

9. Scripture translations and API.Bible

Bible translations made available in RFLXN may be provided through API.Bible and the applicable translation owners and licensors. Those translations remain the property of their respective rights holders. RFLXN subscriptions, if any, give you access to app features; they do not transfer ownership of Bible text or grant rights beyond personal use inside the Service.

RFLXN may add, remove, replace, limit, or update translations based on license availability, API.Bible requirements, rights-holder instructions, app-store requirements, or technical constraints. Scripture copyright notices are available in the app and should be treated as part of these Terms.

You agree not to:

  • download, scrape, export, archive, or bulk-copy Bible text from the Service;
  • redistribute, resell, publish, or sublicense Bible text outside the Service;
  • create generated audio, text-to-speech readback, downloadable recordings, derivative media, datasets, embeddings, fine-tunes, or machine-learning training material from licensed Bible text;
  • remove, obscure, or alter Bible copyright notices, citations, or license notices;
  • attempt to bypass translation access controls or API usage limits.

The app may let you copy or share small verse excerpts for personal study with a citation. You are responsible for using any copied or shared Scripture in a lawful way and in accordance with the applicable translation terms.

10. Acceptable use

You agree to use the Service lawfully and in good faith. You will not:

  • Abuse AI features: use Companion or other AI tools to generate spam, malware instructions, harassment, hate toward protected groups, sexual content involving minors, illegal activity, or content that violates Apple App Store or Google Play policies;
  • Bypass safeguards: attempt to jailbreak, prompt-inject, fine-tune around, or otherwise circumvent safety guardrails, usage limits, subscription gates, or technical access controls;
  • Reverse engineer or extract models: reverse-engineer, decompile, scrape, or extract underlying models, prompts, or proprietary systems except where expressly permitted by law;
  • Misrepresent output: present Companion or other AI responses as authoritative pastoral, medical, legal, or professional advice to others, or as official teaching of any church or denomination;
  • Automate abuse: use bots, scripts, or bulk requests to overload the Service or evade rate limits;
  • Misuse Scripture content: scrape, export, redistribute, generate audio from, train AI on, or otherwise use licensed Bible text outside the limited app experience described in these Terms;
  • Interfere with the Service: disrupt infrastructure, other users, or security measures; access accounts or data without authorization.

We may suspend or terminate access, remove content, or report activity to app stores or authorities when we reasonably believe these rules have been violated.

11. Your content

Journal entries, highlights, notes, and other material you create remain yours. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to host, store, sync, and process that content solely to operate the Service for you. We do not use your journal entries or Companion conversations to train AI models (see the Privacy Policy).

Linked verse references, citations, and Bible excerpts displayed in your journal or bookmarks remain subject to the applicable Bible translation license. RFLXN is designed to store references for API.Bible-licensed translations rather than preserving full verse text as bookmark or journal metadata.

12. Intellectual property

The Service — including software, design, branding, and original content — is owned by RFLXN or its licensors and protected by intellectual property laws. Bible translations and third-party text are used under license from their respective rights holders where applicable. You receive a limited, revocable license to use the Service for personal, non-commercial study in accordance with these Terms.

13. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

Without limiting the foregoing, we do not warrant that:

  • The Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free;
  • Bible text, translations, or AI-generated content will be complete or accurate;
  • Companion responses will align with your tradition or meet your spiritual needs;
  • Any outcome — spiritual, emotional, or otherwise — will result from use of the Service.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain disclaimers; in those cases, disclaimers apply to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.

14. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, RFLXN AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AFFILIATES, AND LICENSORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR SPIRITUAL OR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE — INCLUDING ANY DECISION OR ACTION TAKEN IN RELIANCE ON SCRIPTURE, AI OUTPUT, OR IN-APP CONTENT, OR ANY CLAIM THAT THE SERVICE CAUSED OR CONTRIBUTED TO HARM IN A CRISIS OR MENTAL HEALTH SITUATION.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING OUT OF THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (USD $50).

The limitations in this section apply whether liability is based on contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability, or any other theory, and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Some U.S. states do not allow certain limitations; in those states, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.

15. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless RFLXN and its affiliates from claims, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your misuse of the Service, violation of these Terms, or violation of any law or third-party rights.

16. Dispute resolution and governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules that would apply another state's or country's laws. You agree that any dispute arising out of these Terms or the Service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Tennessee, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.

If you are a consumer, nothing in these Terms limits rights you may have under mandatory consumer protection laws in your U.S. state of residence that cannot be waived by contract.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the revised Terms on this page and update the "Last updated" date. For material changes, we may also notify you in the app or by email where appropriate. Continued use after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes acceptance, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
